Gambling In South Carolina
There are quite a few missing pieces when it comes to land-based gambling and online gambling in South Carolina. The state didn’t even dip its toe into the betting waters for the first time until 1976. But even though there aren’t any land-based casinos, South Carolina could still leap into the virtual gambling world. The Catawba Indian Nation, located in South Carolina, is proposing a new casino to be built. However, the casino would be built just over the North Carolina border. Previously the tribe has been trying to build a casino in South Carolina. The state has been opposed the project whenever submitted.
South Carolina is one of the few states in the land (like Utah) that really does not like gambling in any form.
There are no land-based casinos, either state-authorized commercial properties or those are allowed to run on the tribal ground within the state. As with most laws there are workarounds and if you wanted to play at a casino you could visit one of the state's cruise ships casinos such as the “Big M Casino” which operate from Myrtle Beach. There you can play slots and table games once the ship has moved three miles from land and is in international waters.

The laws on the books even go so far as to ban games of chance that are not even played for money. So even a game of blackjack in the back of a car on a road trip could technically see you falling foul of the law. There are no options for horse racing fans in the state with no active tracks or operators.

Seeing as how restrictive the state is when it comes to gambling, it may be surprising to discover that the state does run a lottery and residents have access to the big money games such as PowerBall and Mega Millions. However, to purchase tickets this must be performed in person from an authorized retailer as no online playing is yet permitted.
